I spent most of my professional and personal lives involved, in a number of ways, with bicycles. More on that later.
In 1978 I was invited to the annual dinner of The Speckled Band of Boston. Prior to that time I had never read from the Canon. I was advised that in preparation for the dinner I should read at least SPEC, SCAN, and MUSG because of their direct connections to the various rituals of The Band. I so enjoyed those stories, and the magical setting and rituals of The Band, that I scoured the local bookstores for Baring-Gould’s Annotated Sherlock Holmes. I found a used set, in dust jackets, for $9.95 and have been reading the Canon ever since.
The most central experience in my Sherlockian lifetime was reading the entire Canon aloud to my younger son, starting on his 8th birthday. There is no greater joy than reading those wonderful words aloud to an avid young person and sharing the excitement of discovering good stories well told.
After having been active in a number of Boston area scion societies, I discovered the larger world of Sherlockians through my friends Dan Posnansky, Scott Monty, Dev deGozzaldi and Tom Francis, and began attending the annual Birthday Weekend events in 1997. I so enjoyed the society of Sherlockians that I have since made it a point to scout out local Sherlockians when I travel. In this way I have made wonderful new friends from around the world and have visited with Sherlockians in France, Italy, and Canada.
I am now a member of several societies, have co-founded two, and am the ‘Poker'(factotum) of The Speckled Band of Boston. I was also founding ‘Bursar’ (treasurer) of The Beacon Society and held that office from 2003 to 2009.
I was invested in the Baker Street Irregulars in 2006 and, in recognition of my life in bicycling, was given the Investiture Bob Carruthers.
In 2009 I presented a paper entitled ‘Children Yet Unborn (How We Envy Them):Teaching Conan Doyle’ at Harvard University’s ‘Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a Sesquicentennial Assessment’ Symposium. In 2014 I presented ‘To Sherlock Holmes She is Always THE Woman. Here is Why’ to The Friends of Irene Adler and was given the investiture ‘Only Crown Prince.’
