Beginning in 1968, the study of the lives of Mr. Sherlock Holmes and John H. Watson, M.D., has been my consuming passion. I’ve published numerous articles on Sherlockiana as well as more than 30 books on Holmes, Dracula, Frankenstein, mysteries, horror fiction, and the Victorian era. I was honored to win the Edgar for “Best Critical/Biographical” work for 2004 for The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Short Stories, published by W. W. Norton, and the companion volume, The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes: The Novels was nominated for the Edgar. In addition, Laurie R. King and I have edited three anthologies of stories inspired by the Sherlock Holmes Canon, A Study in Sherlock, In the Company of Sherlock Holmes, and Echoes of Sherlock Holmes, published by Pegasus Books. Wessex Press has published my ten-volume Sherlock Holmes Reference Library as well as a collection of essays titled Baker Street Rambles. I served as the technical advisor for Warner Bros. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, starring Robert Downey, Jr., and Jude Law and served unofficially in the same capacity for their earlier film Sherlock Holmes.
