I was born and raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and am proud to call it home, no matter where I live. I have lived in several places, some far less satisfying than others, always for work. Someday I will live somewhere for enjoyment. I was a history major, and so have absolutely no marketable degree. I have sold shoes, men’s suits, ice cream, hobbies & models (not the pretty kind), ceiling fans, portable lighting, remanufactured beverage equipment, real estate, and building materials.
I have held every position from salesman to soda jerk to purchasing agent to marketing manager to operations manager to national account executive to senior vice president. In between I have been a graphic designer and webmaster, publishing and writing innumerable newsletters, journals and books.
I am Executive Director of The American College of Heraldry, Distinguished Fellow [DFACH], Fellow [FACH], Board of Governors, Editor of The Armiger’s News, Editor of The Heraldic Register of America; Member, La Asociación de Posesores de Certificaciones de Genealogía, Nobleza y Armas expedidas por el Cuerpo de Cronistas Reyes de Armas de España [Association of Owners of Certifications of Genealogy, Nobility and Coat of Arms Issued by the Corps of the Cronistas King of Arms of Spain]; Director of The International Sister Fidelma Society [Webmaster, Editor of The Brehon, Journal of The International Sister Fidelma Society]; Kentucky Colonel, Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, awarded by the Hon. Paul E. Patton, Governor, Commonwealth of Kentucky [HOKC]; Arkansas Traveler, awarded by the Hon. Mike Huckabee, Governor, State of Arkansas; South Carolina Irish Historical Society; Scottish Society of Charleston; South Carolina Historical Society; The Scottish-American Military Society [SAMS]; Orders & Medals Research Society; Naval Order of the United States – Life Member; Navy League of the United States; Sons of Confederate Veterans; Military Order of the Stars & Bars; Richard III Society; Scottish Tartans Authority; The Society of Heraldic Arts, Associate Member; The White Lion Society; The Heraldry Societies of the UK, Australia, Scotland, Zimbabwe, Southern Africa, The Heraldry Society of the USA; Fellow of The Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacture & Commerce (Royal Society of Arts) [FRSA]; Fellow of the The Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland [FRSAI]; Fellow of the Society for Antiquaries (Scotland) [FSA (Scot)]; The Bookplate Society; International Society of Caricature Artists; Orders and Medals Society of America; North Carolina State University Alumni Association, Pack Partner; and Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, to name but a few.
My interests include Heraldry and Heraldic Art/Bookplates, Genealogy, Chivalry, History/Archaeology, Handguns/Target Shooting, Wine, Cigars, Sherlock Holmes, Netsuke Collecting, Scuba Diving, and Motorcycles, to name but a few.
Eclectic fairly well sums up my life to date.
I have a beautiful and extremely intelligent daughter, and a beautiful and somewhat runs-into-solid-objects-with-great-force cat.
Just remember… Intelligent doesn’t have to mean educated. And Creative doesn’t have to mean talented.
