Brief history
Formed in May 1985. We take our name from the sole mention of Sydney in the Sherlockian canon, which occurs in 'The Adventure of the Gloria Scott' wherein the survivors of the mutiny on that ship are rescued at sea by the Hotspur, a passenger ship bound for Sydney.
Our members mostly come from the Sydney region, some from other parts of Australia, and a number from overseas. Membership hovers around the 130 mark, and is composed roughly of half male and half female.
There are no membership requirements or joining test, only an interest in sharing an appreciation of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson and the marvellous stories penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
We meet around 6 times per year, usually a Sunday lunch or Saturday evening dinner. The theme of most meetings is based on one of the stories, with appropriate presentations and a quiz (some members try to come up with the most outlandish answers); sometimes a scene from the story is play-acted.
Our journal, 'The Passengers' Log', issues 3 times a year, and a newsletter, 'Signals', is despatched prior to each of our functions.
